<title>Boonex Dolphin PHP script is SCAM! Beware! in The Lounge : Off Topic Stuff</title>

<description>Topic: Boonex Dolphin PHP script is SCAM! Beware!

Message: Why Boonex is a scam?Boonex problem nr1. No coding standard Boonex is writen by several people using different technologies. Its main base (Dolphin) is writen in pure php with its own template engine and forum&#160; (Orca) uses xlst. That has large negative impact to integration of forum in site and site in forum. When coding, please use single technology and template system. Whats even worser, different parts of dolphins code itself is writen by completely different people, and very in the hurry. So everyone has its own imagination how to interact with different parts of the code. It is very tricky to modify code that way to suit site needs. Boonex problem nr2. Template engine and separation of code/design/databaseThis problem in dolphin/boonex needs a point on its own. Boonex uses custom template system ( that should be called layout system). The blocks of generated html code are pased to specific places in the template. That creates a big headache for programers as they need to search through code for the place where some box is generated. It might be generated in template, or in specific function in one of numerous includes. And so on. Even pligg has better templating than this. It is very tricky to rip boonex templating apart, as whole coding is based on such poor programming practice. They would be better off using existing template system like smarty or similar one. This leads to problem nr3Boonex problem nr3. Crapy use of DatabaseWe saw serveral other competing sites launched on boonex, but we did not care much. Why? Becouse when they reach 500-1000 daily visitors they will break apart. The reason for it is very bad programming and use of database. For example, boonex uses profile builder which assigns fields to profiles. So the output of profile uses more than one table and is quite inefficient. Also, there is a nice 20-30 query overhead on each page display to fetch all the configuration values from table. Silly, isn’t it ? They would be FAR better of using a file for configuring sofware or caching it in php file like it is done in most of the systems. Another simple problem. When boonex wants to display a profile being online it additionally check database for its status. But that data was pulled from database already. So 20 useless queries again. ResumeI would not suggest using boonex if you want to keep your programmers sane. We have have changed the code almost completely for now, and you will need to do that too. Boonex is a scam. Try googling &#34;boonex scam&#34; first.

<description>Topic: 10 biggest milestones in Web Development

Message: Well, without a shadow of a doubt I have to say that on first look that seems like a very strange list to me, but I think top 10 lists are always going to be flawed. Whilst it does seem like the whole W3C standards process should be mentioned (I don't know where we'd really be without standardisation of HTML as well as CSS), I guess the push they're going for is the fact that CSS was so important as it separated style from content and made site development much much easier. However some things strike me as being very absent.MySQL anyone? Apache?Points 8 and 9 seem flawed to me, but then I'm not a ruby coder, so maybe I don't know what I'm missing ;)

<description>Topic: 10 biggest milestones in Web Development

Message: Perhaps following in the vein of your championing the pre-toys-r-us version of the internet, I came across this 17 People who changed the Internet article in which I learnt the name John Postel. I had never come across this guy before, doubtless there are more like him. But the fact remains, so many of the Facebook, Wordpress, Google, etc. darlings have so much to be thankfully for, like this Mr.Postel who did so much in laying the foundations, while they gather masses of venture and investment capital. I'm not bitter, just sad those before who did it as their passion never saw the reward. Makes me glad the Open Source movement is alive, makes me tired of the Marketing dept. that keeps putting those damn ads everywhere!Postel's LawPerhaps his most famous legacy is from RFC 793, which includes a Robustness Principle which is often quoted as &#34;Postel's Law&#34;: &#34;be conservative in what you do, be liberal in what you accept from others&#34; (often reworded as &#34;be conservative in what you send, be liberal in what you receive&#34;).taken from Wikipedia.com

<description>Topic: 10 biggest milestones in Web Development

Message: The PayPal point is interesting but I think (and this is pretty out there for folks who weren't into it) the demise of the old Bulletin Board Systems of the 80's and early to mid 90's needs to be in there as the internet itself (or more so the World Wide Web) saw it's first major uptake outside of American university's by these boffins who turned their backs on their ANSI-based comms software that served between 1 and 50 phone lines to embrace the true distributed nature of the web.I know when I was a kid and I realised that my 14.4k baud modem could be used to dial into Indigo (an Irish ISP - one of the pioneers on that island) to get onto the web instead of dialling up some guy's amiga running DLGpro in Sutton with two phone lines I was sold!A lot of old sysop's went on to transfer their BBS content to the web and this encouraged people to follow.&#160; I just think the whole BBS history and culture is slept on as it really was amazing what things like FidoNet were able to do before Tim Berners Lee put his mind to work on his Web idea....My two cents anyway...

<description>Topic: 10 biggest milestones in Web Development

Message: IMHO I think Ruby on Rails and the GR eBook could be better represented by the BaseCamp product. Personally I am not a huge fan but there is no arguing with the massive online business they have built for themselves via groundbreaking work, a fresh approach and inspired reimagining of what an online product is.By merging those 2 into 1 point then there would surely be room for Google. Between its ground-breaking search engine, almost daily technology and product releases and mass contribution/consumption of everything else internet based surely it belongs in the top 10!Maybe I am splitting hairs but would designating the W3C as a whole not be a fairer representation of its contribution rather than just the CSS recommendation...

As part of the Google SearchWiki users will be able to reorder, rate, edit, etc. search results as part of what Google Exec. Marissa Mayer said was part of &#34;Search engines of the future&#34;. <description>Topic: Tables in Page Layout starting to reemerge

Message: I have now come across a few too many articles or mentions of the use of tables for page layout not to give it a second look. For so long tables were rightly reviled as poor-mans tool for page layout. Typically generated by tools like Dreamweaver and Frontpage, the HTML code, let alone the CSS was usually a mess. With this now a minority issue, tables are being revisited due to the increasing browser support of the display: table property. Check out this intro article from Think Vitamin.

<description>Topic: Say hello and get acquainted with everyone at CSS Discussion!

Message: I recently released that it has been a very long time since anybody introduced themselves here, including myself. littleBird is a freelance web developer and designer. Based in Europe I have dreams of living and working on a beach, beside a a lovely forest, at the foot of a mountain with family and friends, blah, blah, blah. It would also be great if it wasn't cold and raining all the time. All I need now is a perpetually solid portfolio and customers that pay what I ask and pay on time. When I am not dreaming I spend more time on the web than I honestly feel is humanly good, but what you gonna do! I like to try and help other people with their CSS conundrums or anything else I know about (which includes HTML, PHP, javascript/jquery, wider web trends, etc.). I helps me learn more and it gives that warm fuzzy feeling that someone I have never met is getting something they have set their minds/hearts on completed. That aside I love music, watching stuff and occasionally sleeping in. Nice to meet you all, and I look forward to corresponding with you in the future...
